Savannah Tech, LCCA students to begin rotations in August
APRIL 24, 2014: Hinesville — Four Liberty County industrial employers are seeking candidates for paid apprenticeship opportunities that will begin in August.
The Liberty County Manufacturing Collaboration, comprised of Elan Technology, Firth Rixson Georgia, Interstate Paper and SNF Holding Company, is offering the two-year apprenticeships in partnership with Savannah Technical College and the Liberty College & Career Academy.
The program will provide apprentices with workplace experience while they complete coursework for Associate of Applied Science degrees with a specialization in Manufacturing Technology.
Prospective apprentices and their parents are encouraged to attend an information session from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Monday, May 5 at the Liberty College & Career Academy, during which LCMC representatives will be on present to answer questions.
During their first year, program participants will work 15-20 hours per week on a three-month industry rotation. Participating employers are Elan Technology, a manufacturer of ceramic and glass insulators for electronic components; Firth Rixson Georgia, a provider of forged metal aerospace products; Interstate Paper, a kraft linerboard manufacturer; and SNF Holding Company, the world’s largest manufacturer of water-soluble polymers.
“Working at each industry will provide insight into several types of advanced manufacturing operations, materials and processes,” said Chris Bohlmann, Vice President and General Manager at Firth Rixson. “Students will see that these highly skilled positions can transform into lucrative careers at home in innovative, high-tech fields.”
Second year students will focus on one manufacturing site to advance their training. At the conclusion of the program, apprentices will be considered for employment.
To qualify, candidates must either be enrolled in Savannah Tech or in the Liberty College & Career Academy. Preference will be given to those who are enrolled in or have completed the Certified Manufacturing Specialist program. Liberty County residents also will be given preferential placement.
Candidates also must be at least 18 years of age, must pass the Compass test and will be required to complete physicals, drug screenings and background checks.
Savannah Technical College will offer its next Certified Manufacturing Specialist course from June 2-July 24. Interested candidates may learn more by visiting http://www.savannahtech.edu/business-industry/career-education/
