By Air

Savannah Hilton Head International Airport is 30 miles north of Liberty County. MidCoast Regional, a general aviation airport, is just outside of Hinesville. It is a joint civilian/military operation.

With Interstate 95 running through the county, I-16 only 25 miles north and I-10 115 miles south, Liberty is at the nexus of a transportation hub. From Tradeport East Business Center in Midway, a truck can drive over night to Miami to the south, Mobile, AL, to the southeast, Nashville, TN, to the northwest or Richmond, VA, to the north.

There are also two federal highways, 84 and 17, running through the county. Known as Ocean Highway, 17 is four-lane in places and was once the main north-south artery of the Eastern Seaboard. It was how New England snowbirds reached Florida each year. Highway 84 starts at I-95’s exit 76 at Midway, runs through the county west, across the South into Texas and then northwest into Colorado.

Besides rubber wheel transportation, CSX has a main freight line that runs through Liberty County. Amtrak also travels that route with the nearest terminals in Jesup and Savannah.

There’s also a shortline, Genesee & Wyoming’s Riceboro Southern RR that operates about 33 miles of track that terminates near Riceboro’s DS Smith Paper Mill. Some of the shortline’s route into Savannah is leased from CSX. It also serves SNF Holding Company operations in Riceboro and traverses both Midway Industrial Park and Tradeport West Business Center just south of Midway.

That shortline links to the Georgia Port Authority’s Mason Mega Rail intermodal terminal at the Port of Savannah. It serves both Norfolk Southern and CSX lines.

Liberty County is home to MidCoast Regional Airport at Wright Army Airfield (KLHW), a joint-use, civilian/military aviation facility on Fort Stewart, but with easy access to the civilian community. The airport serves the community’s general and corporate aviation needs with two runways, one 6,500 feet and the other 5,000 feet. It has a state-of-the-art terminal for civilian and military use, and with hangar space, tie-down areas, crash carts and tower following. It is operated by Heath Aviation and houses MidCoast Aviation Services, a training and charter operation. The Liberty County Development Authority, the Liberty County Board of Commissioners and the City of Hinesville are civilian partners with the U.S. Army in the joint-use facility.
